Why focus on Mental Health?
Mental Health Matters
Too many barriers & limited help
Many young athletes face barriers to seeking help for mental health issues. These barriers can include stigma, fear of negative consequences, and a lack of awareness about available resources. By openly addressing mental health, we can create an environment where athletes are more comfortable discussing their mental health and seeking help when needed.
Inspired Performance
Reduced Concentration: Athletes with poor mental health may struggle to focus on their training or competition. Impaired Decision-Making: Anxiety and depression can affect an athlete's ability to make quick and effective decisions. Decreased Motivation: Poor mental health can lead to a lack of motivation and enthusiasm.
There is a Need
Negative behaviors can surface
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately 20% of adolescents in the United States experience mental health challenges, including conditions like depression and anxiety. In a survey of youth athletes, USA Today reported that 60% of those surveyed had experienced sports-related burnout and exhibited signs of poor mental health.
Addressing mental health and wellness in youth sports can contribute to reducing negative behaviours such as substance abuse, self-harm, and aggression, which can be associated with untreated mental health issues.
